4” saggar fired vase with painted gold ginko leaves
![]() What is saggar fired you ask? A Saggar is a closed container in which you put a pot. Originally it was a larger lidded pot used to protect glazed pots from the wood ash that would fall onto it during the firing. In this modern example, the pot is not glazed; it goes bare into a bed of wood chips and straw surrounded by other materials, such as steel wool, fibres soaked in red iron oxide, sprinkles of cobalt carbonate, etc. During the firing those materials fume colours onto the pot leaving largely unpredictable results. Item is not watertight. Valued at $110 Current bid: $0 Donated By Jane Murray Smith

6” Horsehair and feather vase
![]() Hose hair and feather :The origins of this technique came from the American Southwest First Nations potters. The unglazed pot is heated to about 1000’ F, and the horsehair ( the squiggly lines) is laid on the pot leaving a carbon imprint. Then l lay a feather onto the surface .. in this case Canada goose and like the horsehair leaves a carbon imprint. Finished with beeswax polish. 1125 Water Street
![]() In loving memory of our friend Joanna Drummond. The work of Joanna Drummond (b. 1952) is endlessly evolving. This artist, who is also an instructor and mother, never ceases to push her discipline in new directions. She continues to work and teach, always ready to share her wisdom about life, creativity and her ultimate passion, clay. In 1976 Joanna moved from Ontario to Alberta. Joanna was instrumental in the community arts scene. Her guidance and eagerness helped establish the St Albert Potters Guild. Sculpting clay and raku firing fueled her passion. Her ability to master this complex process became something she shared willingly. Her extensive knowledge and delightful manner eventually led her to teaching design, gazing and raku firing. During Joanna’s 40+-year career, her work has been exhibited at The Mountain Galleries of Jasper, Banff and Whistler. Her unique pieces have found homes all over the world. She has enjoyed numerous private and public gallery showings throughout Western Canada. Joanna’s philanthropic spirit was acknowledged when she received the following; Awards • The United Nations International St Albert Woman of Distinction Award for Philanthropy • The Mayor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts • Community Recognition Award in Arts and Culture, St Albert, Alberta Permanent Collections • The Alberta Foundation for the Arts • St Albert Arts and Heritage Foundation • The City of St Albert Commissions • The Lieutenant Governor’s Leadership Awards • The International Children’s Festival, St Albert, Alberta • The Government of Alberta Valued at $250 Current bid: $0 Donated By Dawn Nedzelski Item pickup location: Victoria. |

Solid colour controlled crackle raku vase 10"
![]() These are very exciting to make. If l was to just put the pot into the burning materials, it would be evenly crackled all over. Instead, l first lay many layers on newsprint flat on the ground and as soon as the pot is out of the kiln it is laid onto the paper with a large margin of paper close to me. Does it burst into fire? Yup! So l quickly roll the edge over creating a tube which is shooting flames out either end, fold the ends over quickly and put it in a lidded metal can. The differences in the amount of air create the crackle pattern. By potter Jane Murray Smith: maker of fine handmade pottery: saggar, horse hair and feather decorative pieces, as well as functional work for everyday use. She draws inspiration in the shapes and colours of nature. Each form that she creates on the wheel is an individual she is continuously looking for new surface treatments that accent each form. 'I see you' - oil on gold leaf
![]() Sheila Mather lives near the charming coastal town of Sidney on Vancouver Island. Her light-filled studio is surrounded by the trees, birds and wildlife which inspire many of her paintings. Her early days were spent in Vancouver running her own design and illustration company. A move to the Island in 2000 brought with it a slower pace of living and an opportunity to turn to painting full-time. For over 10 years she painted with pastels, winning several prestigious awards and achieving Master Pastellist designation. Her current work involves painting on and with gold leaf. Once she had mastered the art of gilding she began to explore how the medium could be manipulated. She paints on the leaf, applying the paint traditionally and also lifting it off to create highlights, and her gilded backgrounds are as important to her paintings as the images themselves. By layering the leaf, employing a variety of techniques to build texture and depth, and combining different colours of leaf she creates beautiful and unique work which pushes the boundaries of traditional gilding. ‘The work of being an artist never ends – it is both a challenge and a passion, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.’ Valued at $250 Current bid: $0 Donated By Dawn Nedzelski Item pickup location: Victoria. |
