	Spring: Rebecca Hass/ Nitaawe Giizhigok earrings + Salve When I bead earrings, regalia, pins, necklaces, and more, I think about the story the beads can tell. I think about the medicine I want to transfer into the beading. I don’t think so much about design, or patterns, or aesthetics, until I have found the medicine the item should carry. The teaching it can pass on to the wearer. As I embrace this traditional form of Métis cultural expression, I have resisted selling my work, preferring to maintain my beading practice as a way to gift others. Spring As spring erupts around me, and I spend time on the land, it is the tiny flowers that mesmerize me. Delicate little blossoms. These flowers come to me from my childhood memories from back east. The Yellow and blue edging calling me to warmer days and the summer ahead. This original design is one of a kind, and hand made, thus the pair are joined by design, but are not identical. The teaching I carry is that it is a gift to remember that I am not perfect, and within that, there is great freedom to create and make. These earrings are created directly on smoked hide, and will carry the scent of that smoke for many years. This hide is very soft and tender, and allows me to bead directly, versus commercially tanned hide that is very resistant to beading. This hide was gifted to me in exchange for my creating gifts for a potlatch. For the one who wears these, I hope the smoky scent, and the delicate flowers, connect you to your own memories of a place and a time, when you felt filled with hope for sunny days to come. 	Skilling, Dave: Linocut print "The mighty Garry Oak reveals its powerful architecture when it is without its leaves in the winter season." This linocut print was made using three separate blocks, each inked and run through the press to create a multi-coloured print. As a result, each print in the series has its own unique colouring. Dave Skilling studied with Victoria Edgarr at Ground Zero Printmakers and with Pat Beaton and Heather Aston at MISSA (Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts). In addition, the work of artists Herbert Siebner and Arnold Shives provided much early inspiration. Dave enjoys the multi-stage process of printmaking and the assorted hand tools required to work with lino blocks. Spring: Rebecca Hass/ Nitaawe Giizhigok earrings + Salve

When I bead earrings, regalia, pins, necklaces, and more, I think about the story the beads can tell. I think about the medicine I want to transfer into the beading. I don’t think so much about design, or patterns, or aesthetics, until I have found the medicine the item should carry. The teaching it can pass on to the wearer. As I embrace this traditional form of Métis cultural expression, I have resisted selling my work, preferring to maintain my beading practice as a way to gift others.

Spring
As spring erupts around me, and I spend time on the land, it is the tiny flowers that mesmerize me. Delicate little blossoms. These flowers come to me from my childhood memories from back east. The Yellow and blue edging calling me to warmer days and the summer ahead.

This original design is one of a kind, and hand made, thus the pair are joined by design, but are not identical. The teaching I carry is that it is a gift to remember that I am not perfect, and within that, there is great freedom to create and make.

These earrings are created directly on smoked hide, and will carry the scent of that smoke for many years. This hide is very soft and tender, and allows me to bead directly, versus commercially tanned hide that is very resistant to beading. This hide was gifted to me in exchange for my creating gifts for a potlatch.
For the one who wears these, I hope the smoky scent, and the delicate flowers, connect you to your own memories of a place and a time, when you felt filled with hope for sunny days to come. The promise of spring after winter has passed.

Skilling, Dave: Linocut print

"The mighty Garry Oak reveals its powerful architecture when it is without its leaves in the winter season."

This linocut print was made using three separate blocks, each inked and run through the press to create a multi-coloured print. As a result, each print in the series has its own unique colouring.

Dave Skilling studied with Victoria Edgarr at Ground Zero Printmakers and with Pat Beaton and Heather Aston at MISSA (Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts). In addition, the work of artists Herbert Siebner and Arnold Shives provided much early inspiration.

Dave enjoys the multi-stage process of printmaking and the assorted hand tools required to work with lino blocks. His prints are often abstract, drawing from the visual clues and patterns of his every day surroundings.

"Musetta's moment" in La Bohème refers to the aria "Quando m'en vo'" (meaning "When I go out"), also known as "Musetta's Waltz," where the character Musetta sings a showy, attention-grabbing song at a café to reclaim the attention of her on-again, off-again lover Marcello; it's considered one of the most famous and recognizable parts of the opera.

Fun fact: this painting is from Pacific Opera Victoria 's 2011 production of La Boheme, when Dierdre Roberts was an artist in residence!
